Biblical Literacy is...?
BIblical Literacy is...
1. Ability to read the Bible (i.e. the Hebrew Scriptures and Christian New Testament)
2. Knowledge of the contents of the Bible
  - facts, figures, characters, events
  - metaphors, imagery, symbolism
  - theological arguments both specific and extensive
3. Awareness of the significance of the Bible in Western Culture
4. Ability to apply that knowledge/significance to life situations both historical and contemporary
5. Recognition of Biblical allusions in other texts/social artefacts (art, media, literature, news, political life)
6. Ability to embed Biblical knowledge and allusions back into created social artefacts

I'm into the New Testament (especially John's Gospel), technology, literary theory, postmodernism, football and that kind of stuff. I am married to Theresa with three great kids (and a Westie called Grace). I'm a Christian and love the whole church thing, which is good because I also work for the Methodist Church in the UK. My formal job titles are: Director of Research for CODEC at St John's College, Durham University and Secretary to the Faith and Order Committee of the Methodist Church.
